Dark Souls is a Marxist Horror Story

Dark Souls is often described as bleak, punishing, and hopeless - but why does its world feel so broken?

In this video essay, I explore Dark Souls as a horror story about decay, labor, and exploitation, reading the game through a Marxist lens. From endless cycles of work and hollowing, to collapsing kingdoms built on stolen power, Dark Souls presents a world where the system survives even as everyone inside it suffers.

Drawing on themes of capitalism, class struggle, alienation, and historical decay, this essay examines how Dark Souls uses mechanics, world design, and narrative to depict a society trapped in an endless loop - one where sacrifice is demanded, but nothing ever truly gets better.

This is not a video about whether Dark Souls is “political,” but about what its horror reveals when we take its world seriously.
